Carolina Marin took the gold at the Syed Modi International Badminton Championship in Lucknow with an absolutely smashing performance against Phittayaporn Chaiwan.

Both players made an even start to proceedings in the opening game, before Carolina put the pedal to the metal and reeled off seven straight points to open up a commanding 14-6 lead. While Chaiwan did offer a brief resistance, it wasn’t enough to prevent Carolina from taking the opening game.

Chaiwan seemed even more determined in the second game as she produced a string of winners to race into a healthy lead at the halfway mark. But then you never write off Carolina at any stage, she took 12 of the next 13 points to turn the tables on the Thai player. The moment was enough to carry Carolina through, as she closed off the match and take the second championship win of the year.

Sourabh Verma launched a valiant battle against Tzu Wei Wang of the Chinese Taipei as he finished runner-up in the men’s singles category.

Sourabh had a 1-1 record against his opponent, and both players made a cautious start to the finals match-up. They remained locked at 10-apiece halfway through the opening game. And then Tzu Wei then made his move to open up a healthy lead at 18-12 and then took three straight points to close out the opening game.

With the first game in the bag, Tzu Wei made a more confident start in the second and while Sourabh did his best to stay close to his opponent, the Chinese Taipei player eventually took the game and the match 21-15 21-17 in just under 50 minutes.

In the doubles action, Rodion Alimov/Alina Davletova took the mixed doubles crown with a win over the English pair Marcus Ellis/Lauren Smith. While the seventh seeds Baek Ha Na/Jung Kyung Eun defeated compatriots Chang Ye Na/Kim Hye Rin in a pulsating women’s doubles title clash.

The men’s doubles finale concluded the proceedings at Lucknow, wherein He Ji Ting/Tang Qiang took down the third seeds 21-18 21-19 to win the gold medal.
