Two-time Olympic Champion, five-time world champion and arguably the greatest shuttler to have ever graced a badminton court – the legendary Lin Dan – has called time on his illustrious career spanning almost two-decades.

The retirement means that Lin Dan who won the Olympic Gold in 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics will not have an Olympic swansong at Tokyo 2021 – the games postponed by the ongoing corona virus pandemic.

The former world number one made the announcement on the Chinese social media network Weibo, which read, “My family, coaches, team-mates and fans have accompanied me through many peaks and difficult throughs.”

Lin Dan famously dueled against Malaysian superstar – Lee Chong Wei, who announced his retirement a year ago, and with Lin Dan’s career also coming to a close, one of the most celebrated duos in all of Badminton time have called an end to their on-court career.

The Chinese superstar finishes with more golds than he could care to count, victories in the hundreds and a legend that will live on for all of time to come.
