The Badminton World Federation will convene for its Annual General Meeting on Saturday and there are some key issues to ponder for the world body as lockdown and quarantine rules have rendered the sport in a bit of a quagmire.

Amidst the ongoing turmoil of a world tour calendar thrown off the rails and uncertainty over the Olympic qualifications, BWF will take up another contentious subject up for discussion and vote – the proposed changes to the scoring system. From the current, 21-point, best-of-three format, the AGM will be voting on a new 11-point, best-of-five format.

Outlining its agenda, the BWF released a statement which said that the proposal – to amend the Laws of Badminton relating to the Scoring System – had been mooted by the Badminton Association of Indonesia and the Badminton Association of Maldives and had the backing of Badminton Asia Badminton Korea Association and Chinese Taipei Badminton Association.

The statement added that the proposal had the support of the BWF council as it aligns with the BWF Strategic Plan 2020-2024 that seeks to include new and innovative elements in the games evolution and enhance the global audience base.

Changes to the scoring system are expected to include changes to the provisions that govern changing of ends and continuous play. However, these changes are only expected to come into play, if voted in successfully, only after the Summer Olympics & Paralympics in Tokyo later this year.

The proposed scoring system of a best-of-five format had been first mooted back in 2014 and been through in-depth discussion at the BWF Council meeting in 2017. A vote in 2018 in Bangkok failed to muster enough votes as it felt short of the 2/3rds majority required to accept the proposal.
