If the action on Day 1 of the Yonex-Sunrise Indian Open 2019 is anything to go by, then the badminton fans in New Delhi are in for an absolute treat. There was some exceptional talent on display on Day 1 – and arguably in Ashwini Ponnappa & Sikki Reddy – the crowd had the biggest Indian stars on court as well. And boy, did they put up a show for those in attendance.

Taking on sixth-seeded Chinese pair Li Wenmei & Zheng Yu, the top Indian shuttlers remained behind for much of the first game.

At the halfway mark in the first game, they were almost four points behind, and the Chinese pairing seemed to have a healthy enough lead to take the first game. But Ashwini & Sikki had different ideas as they came roaring back into the game to tie it at 20-20 and then take it in at 22-20.

The second game also followed a similar see-saw pattern, but the Indian pair pipped the Chinese team 21-19 at the end to seal the game and progress into the second round.

Also progressing into the second round were top seeds Greysia Polli & Apriyani Rahayu as they registered a straight games win against Chang Ching Hui & Yang Ching Tun. While fourth seeds Vivian Hoo & Yap Cheng Wen came through with relative east against Emily Kan & Isabel Zhong 21-6 21-8.

Unseeded Indian pairing of Aparna Balan & Sruthi KP had an easy outing against Rudrani Jaiswal & Anubha Kaushik, they won 21-10 21-5. However, the other Indian pair of Meghana Jakkampudi & S Ram Poorvisha fought hard but lost in straight games to Ruethaichanok Laisuan & Supamart Mingchua 21-16 21-19.
