After a month-long hiatus, the HSBC BWF World Tour, is back underway and this time the players are down under for a weeklong badminton odyssey. The Crown Group Australian Open 2019 is all set to kick-off on the 4th of June and a strong Indian contingent has been getting the feel of things in Sydney for the last few days.
This Super 300 tournament will be held at the Quay Centre in Sydney, Australia and has a total prize money of $150,000 on offer.
Top seed for the men’s singles title will be Tien Chen Chou and he will have some tough competition from Anthony Ginting, Jonathan Christie and Kenta Nishimoto. Sameer Verma at number #6 is the top seeded Indian in the men’s draw, while B Sai Praneeth, HS Pranoy and Parupalli Kashyap – all find place in the main draw. A strong Indian contingent will look to make their presence felt and make inroads deeper into the week. Lakshya Sen finds himself in the qualification rounds and will look to force his way into the big league.
Lin Dan, Wing Ki Vincent, Tommy Sugiarto and Lee Dong Keun are some of the other key players to watch out in the men’s singles event.
Japanese star Nozomu Okuhara headlines the women’s draw with Chen Yufei and PV Sindhu seeded 2nd and 3rd respectively. Ratchanok Intanon and Sung Ji Hyun will be the other big contenders for the crown. Michelle Li, Beiwen Zhang are the dark horses, while there are no other Indians in the women’s main draw.
Men’s Doubles will see the Japanese pairing of Takeshi Kamura & Keigo Sonoda as the top seeds while Chinese pair of Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen will look to upset the applecart as the second seeds. The experienced pair of Mohammed Ahsan & Hendra Setiawan are seeded third while the Indonesian pairing of Fajar Alfian & Mohammad Rian Ardianto will round off the top four seeds.
There are two Indian teams in the men’s doubles main draw, and they will square off each other in the opening round itself. Satwik Sairaj & Chirag Shetty taking on Manu Attri & B. Sumeeth Reddy.
Maya Matsumoto & Wakana Nagahara are billed the top seeds for the women’s doubles event with another Japanese team of Yuki Fukushima & Sayaka Hirota being the second seeds. Ashwini Ponnappa & Sikki Reddy are placed in the top half of the draw and may run into the top seeds at the quarter-finals stage. Pooja Dandu & Sanjana Santosh meanwhile, feature in the qualification rounds, looking to make it to the main draw.
The mixed doubles at the Crown Group Australian Open 2019, will feature Wang Yilyu & Huang Dongping as the top seeds. Satwik Sairaj & Ashwini Ponnappa are the lone Indian pairing in the draw.
