Top badminton players are expected to be back in action on the HSBC BWF World Tour, as the sport’s governing body, BWF, announced an adjusted tournament calendar for remainder of the year 2020.
In a statement released last evening, BWF, said that premier badminton tournaments are expected to kick back into action from Aarhus, Denmark where the Thomas & Uber Cup finals are slated to be held from the 3rd to 11th of October. These tournaments will remain part of the international tournament calendar and will be immediately followed by a two-week European leg of the HSBC BWF World Tour in Odense, Denmark.
Expected to start in Mid-October, the Danisa Denmark Open 1 and Denmark Open 2, will be both Super 750 events. A two-week break will follow the European leg, and the tour will move to Asia with two Super 1000 events expected to take place in mid-November. The locations of the Asian leg of the tournaments is yet undecided.
Finally, the tour will conclude in the final week of November, with the HSBC World Tour Finals 2020, being the final showpiece event as always.
“Our main concern is to ensure the health and safety of all personnel participating in planned international tournaments,” stressed BWF in the statement.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not possible to implement the revised international tournament calendar for the HSBC BWF World Tour as originally envisaged.
“Managing travel logistics between different territories where different entry and safety restrictions apply has been the biggest challenge. Therefore, an adjusted tournament calendar was developed,” added BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund.
Tournaments completed in 2020 will accumulate world ranking points, although such points will only be included with the unfreezing of the World Rankings.
The exact model for the unfreezing of the World Rankings, and how subsequent rankings are structured and valued, will be released shortly.
