The World Number One pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo have withdrawn from the Asian leg of the HSBC World Tour, starting with the Yonex Thailand Open from January 12, 2021. The announcement was made after Kevin Sanjaya was tested positive for corona virus.

Sukamuljo was tested positive for a test conducted on December 20th, 2020 after he complained of losing his sense of smell and taste, as well as some flu-like symptoms.

“Thank you for your prayers and support, I hope I can recover quickly and be able to train again as before. This is also a lesson for me to always be vigilant in future,” said Sukamuljo in a statement released by the badminton world federation.

Following the positive test, Sukamuljo has been isolation at home with two subsequent tests, the latest one being on the 31st December 2020, also returning positive.

Herry Iman Pierngadi, the head coach for the minions added that the pair wouldn’t have had a chance to enter the tournament even with a positive test now.

“Even if he had tested negative, I wouldn’t have wanted him to compete at these three taxing tournaments. He wouldn’t have had enough time to prepare properly. Right now, his health is of utmost importance,” the coach said.

While there is no latest word on the participation of the rest of the team, they are likely to compete unlike the Japanese & Chinese contingents who chose to withdraw from the tourment last week.

In the women’s singles event, Nitchaon Jindapol, also pulled out of the tournament on account of an injury she suffered during the training. She was slated to take on top-seeded Tai Tzu Zing in the opening round.

The Indian team also made its way to the Thai capital and have checked into the seven-day mandatory quarantine period from yesterday.
