Carolina Continues Her Clinical Run at the HSBC World Tour Finals – Day 2 Review

Carolina Marin continues her phenomenal run in 2021, as she defeated Canadian Michelle Li in the second round-robin match at the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in Bangkok. The reigning Olympic champion took just 35 minutes to win her second game in the league stage and has all but confirmed her place in the semi-finals of the marquee tournament.

Ratchanok Intaton of Thailand returned to winning ways having lost to her compatriot Pornpawee Chochuwong yesterday. Intanon won against PV Sindhu, 21-18 21-13 in a 43-minute pulsating encounter. Pornpawee, meanwhile, inflicted a crushing defeat on Tai Tzu Ying as she looks to have almost booked her place in the semi-finals. South Korean An Se Young also won her second match-up, defeating Evgeniya Kosetskaya 21-13 21-17.

In the men’s singles, Srikanth Kidambi suffered yet another heart-breaking defeating having once again won the opening game. Playing against Wang Tziu Wei of Chinese Taipei, Kidambi made a bright start to take the opening game but couldn’t sustain the momentum in the second before losing the match in a tight third game.

Danish stars Viktor Axelsen & Anders Antonsen both won their respective ties to firm up their chances of qualification for the semi-final, while Chou Tien Chen pushed Anthony Sinsuka Ginting towards the exit by inflicting a second straight loss. 

In doubles action, top seeds Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin defeated the English pair Ben Lane/Sean Vendy, while the Russian pair Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Suzonov overcame the second seeded Malaysian pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik. 

In women’s doubles Chloe Birch & Lauren Smith dug deep and made a stunning comeback against Linda Efler/Isabel Herttrich of Germany in a 1 hour, 18 minute marathon encounter, while top seeded Indonesian pair Greysia Polii & Apriani Rahayu made short work of the Malaysian challengers Vivian Hoo/Yap Cheng Wen 21-17 21-7.

Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue of France continued their exquisite form as they defeated their Malaysian opponents in just 36 minutes, while the home-favourites Dechapol Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai suffered a reversal at the hands of the South Koreans Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yujung. Elsewhere, the Indonesians Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja & Paveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti both won their respective feisty encounter against European opponents.
