Carolina Marin has pulled out of the All-England Badminton Championships slated to commence from tomorrow, citing injury concerns. The last-minute pullout will definitely rob the premier badminton tournament of the season of some star-power but also allow some of the other players to come into contention for the title.

The Olympic Gold Medalist who won the recently concluded Swiss Open in Basel, Switzerland said that she had sustained the injury whilst playing at the St Jakobshalle and the decision to pullout is to ensure the injury is sufficiently managed and she can return to full fitness before taking to the court in the all-important Olympic season.

“Unfortunately, I won't be able to play next week at the All England because of the injury I suffered during the Swiss Open. I'll be back soon!” said the Spanish star.

Carolina won back-to-back titles in Bangkok in January before losing the world tour finals to Tai Tzu Ying, and recently overcome Olympic Silver Medalist PV Sindhu at the Swiss Open to tally up three titles and a final for the year already.

In addition to the risk of further aggravating her injury, the fact that the All-England tournament is not part of the Olympics qualifications race must have also weighed-in the decision-making process.

Carolina was the top seed and certainly one of the favorites to take the title in Birmingham. In addition to Carolina, the tournament will also be without Tai Tzu Ying and we could see a first-time winner in women’s singles this year.

PV Sindhu, Akane Yamaguchi, Ratchanok Intanon and Saina Nehwal will fancy their chances as will some of the younger contenders such as Pornpawee Chouchuwan and An Se Young.
