Spain started hosting important Badminton events from 1992. Over the years, it has hosted several high-profile events, including the World Championships in 2001 and 2006, the Sudirman Cup in 2001, and the recent European Championships.

Now, Barcelona is going to host the HSBC BWF World Tour Event this year in August and September.

Barcelona hosted badminton’s debut at the Olympics 26 years ago. After almost two and a half decades, Barcelona will stand a chance to play host to an HSBC BWF World Tour event this year.

Spain will see the return of biggies in Badminton due to the HSBC BWF World Tour and a Super 300 tournament.

Carolina Marin, the Badminton Olympian, is expected to grace the inaugural event while the event is planned to be hosted by Barcelona for the next four years.

The event is scheduled to be held from 28th August to 2nd September 2018 at the Vall D’Hebron Olympic Pavillion. The Spain Masters, also a part of HSBC BWF World Tour joins ten other Super 300 events to participate in the event with the total prize purse estimated to be US$150,000.

The other Super 300 events on the circuit are Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters; Yonex Swiss Open; Yonex German Open; Barfoot & Thompson New Zealand Open; Crown Group Australian Open; Yonex US Open; Yonex Chinese Taipei Open; Macau Open; Syed Modi International Badminton Championships, and Korea Masters.

Spain also has an International Challenge event – the Iberdrola Spanish International – which was hosted in June in Madrid.
