Former world number one, three-time world & Olympic silver medalist, and a bonafide legend of the game Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia announced his retirement from the game at a press conference earlier today. This pulls down the curtains on one of the famed international badminton careers of all time.
Speaking to the reporters, Lee Chong Wei, said, “"Today everyone know more or less my intention for calling this press conference. I would like to announce that I'm retiring from the sport after 19 years.”
Calling it a really tough decision, Lee Cong Wei, said the fact that he had been deemed unfit for high intensity activities, forced his hand.
"It was a tough decision to make but I was left with no option after my recent consultation with doctors in Taiwan last month,” said Lee, who has been fighting a battle with Nose cancer. Although he sought treatment in Taiwan and made it clear earlier that retirement wasn’t on the cards. He has now finally decided that a final shot at the elusive Olympic gold is now beyond his reach.
He thanked his coaches, people of Malaysia, friends and colleagues for their love, adulation and support over the years.
Although a gold has eluded him at the World Championships and Olympics, there is little to doubt the stature & success of Lee Chong Wei.
A total of 349 weeks on top of the world rankings, of which the longest streak lasted a 199-weeks, with 46 super series titles makes him a colossal great of the game. And with the curtains now coming down on his illustrious career, fans are sure to miss his trademark net-play and cross-court smashes.
