Parupalli Kashyap produced a stirring performance late in the evening, as he took a thrilling three-game victory against Korean competitor Kim Donghun 23-21 19-21 21-17 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance Hyderabad Open 2019. It had been a mixed first day of the main draw for the Indians, but Kashyap ensured that the local fans will have something to cheer for in the next round.
Kashyap took a tight opening game and looked well-poised to take the match in two straight games but narrowly missed out on the second game. The third game proved to be a see-saw battle of wits as both players went toe-to-toe with each other with the veteran Indian shuttler coming through at the end.
Sikki Reddy & Ashwini Ponnappa also produced an excellent performance to win in three games. They had a rather eventful start to the match with a bit of a court malfunction and the match being moved to a different court. The switch did not seem to trouble the Indian pair too much as they won the first game 21-13, although the Malaysian pair reversed the score in the second game. Sikki/Ashwini however prevailed in the third game and moved into the second round.
Mithun Manjunath, Aryamann Tandon, Sai Uttejitha, Aakarshi Kashyap, Sourabh Verma, Shubhankar Dey, Ajay Jairam were some of the other Indian winners in the singles event. While Manu Attri/Sumeeth Reddy, MR Arjun/Shlok Ramachandran, Pooja Dandu/Sanjana Santosh, Meghana/Poorvisha were amongst those who prevailed in the Doubles event.
