Persistent injuries have forced Satwik Sairaj & Chirag Shetty to pull out of the upcoming World Championships in Basel, Switzerland. The duo has failed to recover sufficiently from their respective injuries – Satwik has a troubled shoulder & while Chirag is also carrying a few niggles.

Chirag announced the decision on Social Media, wherein he said “I and Satwik won’t be participating in this year’s BWF World Championships due to injuries which we were carrying through the Thailand Open. We could have played at the Worlds but there was a risk of aggravating the injury and missing out on tournaments in the future. And after discussing with the coaches and our physios we’ve decided to give it a miss and focus on the next set of World Tour events coming up in September in China and Korea.”

“Difficult times but all we can do right now is rest so that we can come back on court as soon as possible to start our preparations for the upcoming tournaments,” added Shetty.

After the stupendous success at the Thailand Open Super 500, Satwik Sairaj & Chirag Shetty were looking forward to causing a few upsets at the World Championships but will now be undergoing rest & rehab at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy and try and get fit for the tournaments in the final third of the year.

Satwik Sairaj had missed a part of the season earlier in the year with the same shoulder niggle and played through the pain in Thailand. The champions in Thailand, then gave their home tournament a miss in order to be fit for the mega event in Basel, but they’ve now run out of time to participate in the annual showdown of the best badminton players from across the globe.

This is a big blow to the Indian team with effectively no representation in the mixed doubles event as Pranav Jerry Chopra also announced his withdrawal from the tournament with a leg injury. Satwik & Pranav’s mixed doubles partners – Ashwini Ponnappa & Sikki Reddy – will now compete in the Women’s Doubles only.

World Badminton Championships start on the 19th of August and will conclude on the 25th of the same.
