Kashyap Continues Impressive Run at Korea Open

Parupalli Kashyap continued his impressive, and solo run at the Korea Open 2019, with a hard-fought win against Malaysian Daren Liew in the second round of the men’s singles. 

Kashyap won a relatively tight opening game, but then lost the second one when Liew took 13 straight points to leave the Indian way far behind. Only to then mount an impressive comeback in the third with a 11-point streak of his own. The see-saw battle ended 21-17 11-21 21-12 in Kashyap’s favour and he will now take on Jan O’ Jorgensen for a place in the final four.

Also, into the QFs was top seed Kento Momota, who continues his red-hot winning streak with a straight game, win over Kim Donghun 21-12 21-9 in just over half hour. Momota will take on Malaysian challenger Lee Zia Jia. Zia caused the biggest upset of the day, taking down former world number #1 Viktor Axelsen 21-18 21-16

Indonesian fourth seed Jonatan Christie also progressed to the last eight with a hard-fought win over Khosit Phetpradab and will play Wang Tzu Wei of Taiwan for a place in the semi-finals. While, second seeded Chou Tien Chen will square off against Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

In the women’s singles, second seeded Chen Yu Fei and third seeded Tai Tzu Ying progressed into the QFs and will take on He Bing Jiao and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, respectively. Ratchnaok Intanon made a blinding start to proceedings against Japanese Aya Ohori and eventually took the match 21-4 21-13 to set up a QF clash against another Japanese Sayaka Takhashi. Michelle Li and Nozomi Okuhara will round-off the last of the QFs in the women’s singles draw.

Top seeds and winners of the last week’s China Open, Marcus Fernaldi and Kevin Sanjaya defeated the Malaysian pair Goh V Shem & Tan Wee Kiong. They will take on compatriots Fajar Alfian and Muhhamad Rian Ardianto in the men’s doubles QFs. While, Danish pair Mathias Boe & Mads Conrad-Petersen will take on the forces of the Japanese pair Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonada.

In women’s doubles, second seeded Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi defeated the Thai pair Puttita Supajirakul & Sapisree Taerattananachai 21-10 21-18, and will take on the six seeds Lee So Hee & Shin Seung Chan. Meanwhile, fourth seeds Chen Qing Chen & Jia Yi Fan also made it to the QFs with a three-games win over Canadian pair of Rachel Honderich & Kristen Tsai.

Top seeds for the Mixed Doubles event Zheng Si Wei & Huang Ya Qiong defeated the British pair, the Adcocks, 21-8 21-10 in a rather lopsided contest. While third seeds Yuta Watanabe & Arisa Higashino overcame their Chinese opponents in a similar fashion 21-7 21-9.
