Satwik/Chirag Equal Best Ever Career World Ranking #9

Satwik Sairaj & Chirag Shetty are back in the top 10 of the BWF World Rankings for Men’s Doubles following their excellent run at the Yonex French Open 2019. The dynamic Indian duo equalled their best ever ranking of #9 as per the latest rankings released by the Badminton World Federation.

Satwik/Chirag moved up two places from number #11, and this is their second time in the top ten of the rankings – having earlier been ranked #9 following their historic win at the Thailand Open in July.

The French Open was a dream run for the Indian pair as they defeated world number #2 Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan in the second run before taking down the #7 ranked Danish pair Kim Astrup/Anders Rasmussen. Satwik & Chirag also accounted for the fifth ranked 
Japanese pair Horoyuki Endo/Yuta Watanabe, before eventually losing to the world #1 pair Marcus Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya.

Taking on four and defeating three of the top 10 teams in a single week is no mean achievement, and surely must boost the young duo’s confidence as they make a charge to be in the top 8 for the year-ending World Tour Finals in December.

Having had a tough time in the earlier part of the year, because of Satwik’s sternum injury; the duo is currently at #22. They jumped seven places on the back of their impressive run at the French Open, but still have a 30,000 points deficit to make up with just about six weeks left until the Tour Finals kick off in Guangzhou. 

There’s also good news in terms of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 qualification for Satwik/Chirag, as they consolidated their position in the top 10, by moving up 2 places to #7 in the latest release.

In men’s singles, Srikanth Kidambi is the lone Indian in the top 10, while Sai Praneeth is just outside the top 10 and just 1000 points shy of breaking into it. In the race to the Olympics, it is Sai Praneeth who is currently assured of a automatic qualification, ranked #10 while Parupalli Kashyap and Sourabh Verma are ranked at #20 and #21, respectively.

PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal are the two Indians in the women’s singles top 10. Sindhu maintains her position at number #6, while Saina also stayed consistent with her #9 ranking. Carolina Marin, the losing finalist in Paris jumped 7 places to roar back into the top 10. The Olympic Gold medallist has been on a surge following a long injury lay off, that seemed to have derailed her season.

South Korean sensation An Se Young, who won the title in Paris, also jumped five places and is now just shy of top 10 place in the rankings.

In the Olympic Qualifications race for women’s singles, PV Sindhu remains steady at #5 while Chinese Chen Yu Fei headlines the rankings with Tai Tzu Ying, Nozomi Okuhara and Ratchanok Intanon all ahead of the world champion. India’s Saina Nehwal & Spanish Carolina Marin are ranked #26 and #27, respectively.

Sikki Reddy/Ashwini Ponnappa dropped two places in the women’s doubles rankings. They remain the highest ranked Indian pair at #26 with Meghana Jakkampudi/Poorvisha Ram also in the top 50. 

In the mixed doubles, Pranav Jerry Chopra & Sikki Reddy maintained their ranking at #26, while Satwik Sairaj/Ashwini Ponnappa dropped a place to #30.
