Sindhu leads Indian charge at the Hong Kong Open Super 500

World number #6 PV Sindhu produced a clinical performance to advance into the second round of the Yonex Hong Kong Open Super 500. Sindhu defeated Kim Eun Ga of South Korea in straight games 21-15 21-16 in the opening round.

HS Prannoy, Parupalli Kashyap and Sourabh Verma also registered wins in the opening round of their men’s singles matches; while Kidambi Srikanth also advanced into the second round with a walkover by world #1 Kento Momota. B Sai Praneeth, meanwhile, lost a tight match against Shi Yu Qi to crash out in the opening round. Sameer Verma also went down fighting against Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei.

Jonatan Christie, Anthony Sinsuka Ginting and Chen Tien Chen all progressed into the second round win hard-fought victories in three games; while Viktor Axelsen, Chen Long & Lee Cheuk Yiu had a relatively easy progress into the next round of the men’s singles.

On the first day of the singles action in Hong Kong, women’s 8th seed Saina Nehwal kicked off proceedings for India taking on Cai Yan Yan. A slow start from the 2012 Olympic Bronze Medallist, allowed her Chinese opponent an advantage in the opening game and despite the second being a more closely fought contest Saina crashed out in straight games.

Also moving into the second round with straight games wins – An Se Young, Nitchaon Jindapol, Ratchanok Intanon Beiwen Zhang and Pornpawee Chochuwong. 

In men’s doubles action Satwik Sairaj & Chirag Shetty rallied hard against Japanese duo Takuro Hoki & Yugo Kobayashi but went down in three games; while the Indian women’s doubles pair of Sikki Reddy & Ashwini Ponnappa also had an off day at work as they crashed out in straight games.

Russian pair Vladimir Ivanov & Ivan Sozonov made light work of their Malaysian opponents, while Mohammad Ahsan & Hendra Setiawan alongside the Minions and Fajar Alfian & Muhammad Adrianto also made it into the second round.

In women’s doubles the Stoeva sisters won against their opponents from Hong Kong, while the mixed doubles pair of Praveen Jordan & Melati Oktavianti and Yuki Kaneko & Misaki Matsumoto also registered easy wins.
