The year 2020, could well be the year that defines and decides the legacy of badminton superstar PV Sindhu. With the Olympics scheduled for August-September in Tokyo, Japan – the world champion has her targets clearly identified.

In an interview with news agency, PTI, Sindhu alluded to the fact that winning the Olympics Gold that she narrowly lost to Carolina Marin in 2016, will be her top priority for the year. The shuttler also wants to scale the peak of the women’s singles’ world ranking and win a few top draw super series titles – as her three of the biggest goals for the marquee year.

“Olympics is the ultimate aim for anybody. We are doing a lot of work on technique and skill workouts and everything will be planned, and it will go well in the Olympics season,” said Sindhu about her preparation for Tokyo 2020.

Looking back at the year gone by, Sindhu seemed satisfied with the returns. While the fans definitely want more, Sindhu said that she is happy with the world championships crown and the runners-up medal in Indonesia.

“I wanted to win a few more super series titles. But I never felt bad about the early round losses, because I always believe that I will bounce back well in the next tournament,” says the world champion.

Talking about her strengths, Sindhu says that unpredictability and big match temperament as the two key ones. While she is at loss to explain how she brings in her big game at big tournaments – she says it’s a positive sign.

Elaborating on the unpredictability aspect, Sindhu said, “Unpredictability is my strength. I feel it’s a good thing. It depends on the day, the shuttle, the surroundings, drift etc.”

That she won only one of the 18 tournaments she entered in 2019, did subject Sindhu to criticism from various quarters. However, the mentally strong athlete that Sindhu is remains unaffected by all the noise around. Be it expectations, or the criticism that comes after an early loss.

Talking about some of her losses, she says, “I learnt a lot from those mistakes. It is important for me to stay positive and come back stronger.”

Sindhu will start the year in Malaysia, followed by the Indonesian Masters before returning to lead the Hyderabad Hunters in the fifth edition of the premier badminton league. March will bring a trip to the All England Championships.

The Olympic qualification term closes not much after that, and preparations will hit top gear for the Summer Olympics of 2020.
