BAI Seeks Relaxed Quarantine Norms for India Open 2021

The Badminton Association of India is ramping up preparation for the Yonex Sunrise India Open slated for the end of March 2021. In this regard, the BAI Secretary Ajay Singhania met the Sports Minister of India and urged him to relax quarantine norms for the foreign players expected to participate in the event.

"I met the honourable sports minister today and requested him to consider the current international practice of accepting a negative RT-PCR test report taken 72 hours before departure on arrival in the country instead of 14-day quarantine," Singhania told PTI.

He added that the tournament is a key event for qualification to the now-postponed Tokyo Olympics and thus the relaxation in norms will allow them to confirm their participation for the event.

The sports minister has assured that the government will take a favourable view of the request and provide the necessary assistance in hosting the evening. 

"I submitted a written request and Kiren Rijiju ji has assured to resolve the issue at the earliest. Both BAI and the Sports Ministry are eager to see badminton make a resounding return to India with the Indian Open Superseries," the secretary concluded.

Badminton has been one of the worst hit sports due to the corona virus pandemic, is yet to resume back a normalized calendar following the break for the pandemic. While, players, sponsors, and some of the leading voices have called for a resumption, the only tournament at the apex level since March has been the Denmark Open 2020.

Thus, 2021 holds a huge significance for players expected to qualify for the Summer Olympics. There are plenty of events scheduled but participation is still an issue for many with widespread travel restrictions and quarantine rules.
