Carolina Marin produced a stunning display of power and precision hitting, as she swept aside reigning world champion PV Sindhu to register her third tournament win of the year. This was a much-anticipated finale to the first European circuit tournament, but eventually proved to be a one-sided affair, as Carolina ran riot with a 21-12 21-5 mauling of her challenger.

The match began on an even kneel as both players tried to settle down into a rhythm. At 6-6, the match settled into a nice back-and-forth exchange with neither player willing to give the other a lot. Carolina made the first move, as she wrested control of the match to head into the mid-game interval 11-8, Sindhu was very much in the game and Carolina was just beginning to open up her range of shots.

Post interval, a four-point streak gave Carolina a firm footing in the game and she was never going to get the foot off the pedal. With the first game wrapped up, Carolina was beginning to assert herself even more and ran away to a 5-0 lead in the second one. Sindhu barely got on board in the second game before Carolina took 8-points on the bounce and effectively bolt the barn in her opponent’s face.

With a commanding 14-3 lead in the second game, the endgame was in sights and she didn’t waste a lot of time in putting the world champion out of her misery. Carolina prevailed in 35 minutes, in a near chanceless game, one that promised a lot, but delivered little in terms of excitement.

Elsewhere, Danish star Viktor Axelsen also took his third title of the year home with a comprehensive win over the 8th seeded Kunlavut Vitidsarn. The Dane won 21-16 21-6 in 47 minutes to add to his titles in Bangkok earlier this year.

In doubles action, French pair Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue took the honours with a hard-fought win over Danish pair Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje, 21-19 21-19, while veteran pair Kim Astrup/Anders Rasmussen defeated their German challengers Mark Lamfuss/Marvin Seidel 21-16 21-11.

The upset of the day, however, would have to be Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva losing the women’s doubles title clash against unseeded Malaysian pair Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan.
