Hyderabad: The Home of Indian Badminton

Over the last two decades, badminton has been rapidly emerging sport in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and few of the European nations with China winning large number of titles. Till five to six years ago, the jinx started to collapse when the powerhouses started to inflate and became stronger.

The Indian badminton, in the major tournaments, from just participation to winning at least a medal, has improved a lot and ready to strike a tough challenge whosoever the opponent is.

But till lately, the sport has never been in the news; it was considered as the non-cricket sport rather than the sport itself - badminton remained in shadows for the most of the time in India.

By the time titles started to heave in the history of Indian badminton, the broadcast of the matches was completely out of the picture. And as the awareness started to spread and academies started to expand, badminton begin to gain the limelight and stood beside cricket.

Till four to five years ago, Indian badminton players such as Pullela Gopichand, Jwala Gutta, and Saina Nehwal were the only known faces. But, it is not the case now; the fan following has been increasing in the massive number as the talented players started to emerge.

The main person behind the rise of Indian badminton is the National Chief Coach Pullela Gopichand and his national camp Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad has been the home of Indian badminton since past few years. The awareness programs and campaigns initiated by multiple sport fraternities has been reaching every nook and corner in the country and the city plays the major role in producing the champs.

The likes of Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, N Sikki Reddy, Ashwini Ponnappa, Pranaav Jerry Chopra, Sourabh Verma, Sameer Verma, RMV Gurusaidutt, and many more shuttlers are proudly represented by the city.

With his seamless dedication, coach Pullela Gopichand trains juniors and young talent, as well, under the same roof with the help of many other coaches for singles, doubles, and juniors, who contribute their thankless effort in the development of the sport.

Gopi’s unwavering commitment towards the sport brought historical medals to the country in the individual and team events.

80% of Indian shuttlers - stand on the top 100 of the BWF World Rankings and most of them are from the academy.

The city being the ménage of most Indian badminton players, not only hosted many Senior Rankings and Sub-Junior Ranking tournaments but also the continental tournament Badminton Asia Team Championships in 2016.

This massive popularity sourced from the city holding bunch of talent submerged in pool of skills, strength, stamina, and speed, led many private organisations  to organise corporate badminton tournaments and leagues for the corporate players, and increase in the number of courts for the amateurs.

However, the BWF Super 100 Hyderabad Open 2018 definitely fortifies the emerging talent and opens fruitful opportunity. Not to forget, the aegis from the Badminton Association of Telangana is making Hyderabad the cohesive home for badminton.

With the good doing from the Indian players on the international courts, badminton gets a better coverage than ever, with LIVE streams and telecasts on TV. Badminton has turned out to be the serious career option attracting parents of the young talent.

Hyderabad remains as the hope for many parents to encourage their kids to pursue the sport.
