Sai Praneeth Wins Over Sameer Verma in Titanic Clash

At least for the Indian fans - B Sai Praneeth v Sameer Verma - was the marquee clash, on Day 3 of the Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2019. And it lived up to its top billing as both players produced sensational performances to enthrall the crowd for an hour and eleven minutes before Sameer Verma beaten in the third game.

18-21 21-16 21-15 is the kind of score-line that reflects that both players had their moments, and both could have easily taken the tie either way, but eventually it was Sai Praneeth who overcame a game-deficit to beat the fifth seed Sameer Verma. And the win sets up another tantalizing all-Indian quarter-final match-up against third seed Srikanth Kidambi – who won quite convincingly against Lu Guangzu 21-11 21-16.

Parupalli Kashyap is the other Indian to make it to the quarter-finals of the men’s singles. He won against Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in just 37 minutes, with a 21-11 21-13 score-line. Meanwhile, HS Prannoy was up against Danish player Jan O Jorgensen and had to fight tooth and nail in a marathon 67 minute encounter to win 21-19 20-22 21-17

In the women’s singles, PV Sindhu remains the only Indian left in the draw, as she progressed to the QFs with a 21-11 21-13 win over Deng Joy Xuan, in just over half-hour. Riya Mookherjee the other Indian in women’s singles action went down in three closely-fought games to Mia Blichfeldt 21-8 17-21 21-13.

In men’s doubles, sixth seeds Manu Attri/B Sumeeth Reddy overcame the challenge from Huang Kaixiang 21-16 21-18 and will take on compatriots Pranaav Jerry Chopra/Shivam Sharma in the quarter-finals. Top seeds Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Ramunsen are also into the QFs with a Goh Se Fei/Nur Izzudin 21-14 21-7

Ashwini Ponnappa/Sikki Reddy continued their impressive run in women’s doubles, taking down Chen Xiofel Zhou Chaomin in straight games 21-18 21-14; and will now play top seeds Greysia Poli/Apriya Rahayu in the quarter-final match. In the bottom-half of the draw Aparna Balan/Sruthi KP overcame a stiff challenge from NG Wing Yung/Yeung Nga Ting 21-19 7-21 21-17

There were three Indian pairs in contention at the start of day three, but there are none left at the end of it. Pranaav Jerry Chopra/Sikki Reddy lost to fourth seeds Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle, while MR Arjun/Maneesha K went down to Ren Xiangyu/Zhou Chaomin. Saurabh Sharma/Anoushka Parikh ended up on the wrong side of a 21-15 21-17 defeat against Russian pairing of Rodion Alimov/Alina Davletova.
