The Badminton Association of India announced the squads for the upcoming Thomas & Uber Cup with PV Sindhu & Srikanth Kidambi to lead the 10-member teams for the women’s men’s events respectively.
Making the cut for the men’s team is veteran Parupalli Kashyap alongside Siril Verma and Lakshya Sen – for singles. In the doubles - Manu Attri & B Sumeeth Reddy will spearhead the squad with Dhruv Kapila, Krishna Prasad Garaga and MR Arjun also present.
In the women’s events, PV Sindhu will be the spearhead with Saina Nehwal while youngsters Malvika Bansod & Akarshi Kashyap will be the backup. Sikki Reddy & Ashwini Ponnappa lead the doubles contingent with Poorvisha Ram, Meghana Jakkampudi, Sanjana Santosh and Pooja Dandu also making the cut.
BAI also announced the cancellation of the preparatory camp, that was earlier announced but failed to take-off due to challenges with the SAI’s guidelines and the lack of time before the event.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) General Secretary Ajay Singhania said that there had been a lot of deliberations and meetings with all the required stakeholders, including SAI, before a call on the cancellation of the camp had to be taken.
“With the SOP implemented and quarantine procedures followed, there will not be enough time to conduct a camp and hence it was a decision taken in consultation with the five selectors and the National Coach. We have also selected a team that will be representing India at the Thomas & Uber Cup as well as the other two tournaments to be played in Denmark,” said Mr Singhania.
The players will now be required to submit fitness certificate by September 17 and train on their own with BAI keeping a close eye on their fitness and training status
"Team departure will be intimated to the players in due course of time once everything is finalized," concluded Mr Singhania.
