Singapore Open’18 Day 2 Update: Guru lost, Dey progresses

 Indians had a mixed fortune on Day 2 at the Singapore Open 2018 badminton tournament as Praneeth and Gurusaidutt lost in the opening rounds, while Subhankar Dey and Sourabh Verma made it to the pre-quarters on Wednesday.

 

Guru’s Battle

 

Subhankar Dey after losing in the first game entered into the pre-quarters match after defeating Jason Anthony Ho-Shue of Canada with 14-21, 21-14, 21-16, while, Sourabh Verma thrashed his compatriot Parupalli Kashyap with 21-9, 21-6

 

In another Men’s Singles event, India’s Gurusaidutt had chance to drag the match in the decider but lost in the straight sets to Qiao Bin of China with 14-21, 19-21 in the lengthy match of 54 minutes.

 

Guru lost the pace after a mini neck-to-neck encounter and trailed with 8-11 by the breather in the opening game, later lost the control. In the second game, Guru picked up well trailing at 1-5 by gaining 6 points in a row and led with 11-10.

 

The opponents exchanged a few points till 16-16 followed by Guru’s close encounter at 19-20.

 

Mugdha Fought and Lost

 

Meanwhile, Mugdha Aggrey who made her first high level international debut at Singapore Open 2018 lost to World No. 21 Gao Fangjie of China with 12-21, 16-21 in the first round match.

 

First game was a little different than usual as the Indian either scored straight points or a single point. Gao started the first game with a bang by scoring four straight points to her advantage with 4-0 and led the game by the interval with 11-6 and took the game.

 

Mugdha played better with her strokes in the second game, where she managed to level her opponent at 3-3 after trailing and then at 12-12 after the break.

 

78th ranked Indian improved a lot in the game who managed to reduce the deficit with 16-20 before losing to the Chinese.

 

India’s Senior Rankings champion Sai Uttejitha Rao’s Valiant fight ended with 23-21, 4-21, 6-21 against World No. 28 Beatriz Corrales in the 44-minute battle, while, Vaidehi Choudhari got ousted by the star Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand with 10-21, 6-21 in just 27 minutes.
